Claude's Phase Gun

Description

The view of the left side of the phase gun, now that it's finished.

Materials used:
- Cardboard
- Hot glue
- Paper mache
- Creative Paperclay, white [with cheap silver and black acrylic paints kneaded in]
- Black, silver, red, green acrylic paints
- Small eyedropper, painted and cut
- Clear coat spraypaint [probably unnecessary in the end]
- Varathane Polyurethane, clear [two layers for extra protection]

I think I spent about 8-9 hours in total on this prop. It took less time to do than the first version did, given that I took a more simplistic approach. I kneaded paint into the clay [which I hadn’t known I could do, the first time!] so that it’d already be a light, metallic grey colour and so I wouldn’t have to wait for the clay to dry first before painting. It also eliminated the issue of brush strokes. A solid, contouring sheet frame approach was a LOT easier and less tedious than the individual piece frame I’d made last time. That one had a bit more definition in places thanks to the painstaking care necessary for its construction, but it was also thus a big headache to get all of the pieces and keep things organized. Some of the features on the new model are a lot more symmetrical with their counterparts on the other side, so I like that a lot. Much wider handle on this one, but the grip looks MUCH nicer. The power meter is miles better, too.

The only issue I have noticed with the paint-infused clay is that it did not dry as solidly as it would have otherwise, and thus it’s a bit mushy in places. It’s good that I got the lacquer for it, but I’m still going to have to be careful. I do have a decent bit of the paint-clay left over and stored, so in case shit happens, I can easily patch it up. Fingers crossed, I won’t need to! I’m really stoked to have a better prop for this year.

Star Ocean belongs to Square-Enix and Tri-Ace. I took some creative liberties to account for a lack of details in the design, as far as I could find, so I can’t claim this as my original design but some of it came from me.

Pretty cool. Will you get to the other Star Ocean equipment. Maybe some of those used by the Wise Men?
